Serving Others

This whole Kony2012.com thing has me thinking today. How as a Youth Pastor am I conveying the need to SERVE others? Jesus made the claim that the first shall be last and the last shall be first – Matthew 20:16
When I think about all the stuff that Kony is about, ultimately where I get to in my train of thought, it is about SERVING the people whom are in treacherous situations. In watching the long video, it is filled with much emotion towards helping the people. The plan for success is a little muddy, but the charge for change is evident for their purpose. That is what I am behind, change the social injustice that has been happening. Change the situation of my neighbor.
We all have the ability to serve others. Mike Lee, senior Pastor at Hope Community Church, posed the question to us – Who is your Neighbor? Who are we required to serve when confronted with scripture like that in Matthew 20:16 ?
In reading one of my favorite books of the bible, James 1:27 - 27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.
We ought to look out for orphans and widows, why? Because they need it! Not to gain success, fame, fortune, but simply because they need it. I’ve been blessed with the ability to travel to India for missions trips, in which we have cared for orphans. The children are so loving and caring and in need of someone to show them love. The reason we need to serve them, because we need to show them love! The love that they seek is ultimately God’s love – when we show it, God is directly showing them love, by using us!
With the goal of Invisible Children on the front lines of speaking up for the children who are orphans in a country whom the wrong person has “CARED” for these orphans. His tactics of making them orphans, sex-slaves, rape, soldiers, murder, etc has created a lose of character among these children. The rationalization of needing to step in and help is a big deal.
Here’s my verbal thoughts out there… mainly specifically toward Kony, but ultimately I’m for serving others, especially the orphans and the widows.
An example of someone trying to make a difference in this area is a good friend of mine Kevin White. He has begun an organization to serve others in an impoverished nation – India! Check out GlobalHopeIndia.org for more information about serving India’s orphans, widows and the poor of India. You can make a difference. The questions is… HOW will you do it?
